Eagles add veteran backup QB in trade with Panthers
Mar 18, 2026
The Eagles on Wednesday pulled off a trade to acquire veteran backup quarterback Andy Dalton from the Carolina Panthers for a 2027 seventh-round pick, a league source confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the trade.
The next question: What does this mean for
Tanner McKee?
McKee, 25, is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie NFL contract and has been the Eagles’ backup quarterback behind Jalen Hurts. McKee (6-6, 231) has been the subject of plenty of trade speculation this offseason. Having another trusted veteran in the building gives the Eagles options.
But for now, this move does not signal any pending trade. Dalton is the Eagles’ No. 3 behind Hurts and McKee. We’ll see if that changes in the coming weeks and months. Of course, the Eagles do value their quarterback depth every year. The Eagles’ No. 3 quarterback last year was Sam Howell, who left in free agency this offseason to join the Cowboys. The Eagles acquired Howell in a trade last summer after McKee suffered a thumb fracture.
Dalton, 38, has played 15 seasons with 169 starts in his long NFL career. He has thrown for nearly 40,000 yards in those 15 seasons with 254 touchdowns and 151 interceptions.
The 2025 season is Dalton’s final under his current contract and he has a base salary of $3.9 million.
Dalton began his NFL career in 2011 after the Bengals drafted him in the second round (No. 35 overall) out of TCU. Dalton made his first of three Pro Bowls as a rookie in 2011. After nine seasons with the Bengals, Dalton played one year in Dallas, one year in Chicago, one year in New Orleans and the last three in Carolina. Over the last three seasons as the Panthers’ backup, Dalton has started 7 games.
In 2025, Dalton started just one game — a 40-9 loss to the Bills in October. In that game, Dalton completed 16 of 24 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown.
In his career, Dalton has had success against the Eagles. Dalton has started four games against the Eagles in his career and has a 4-0 record with 6 touchdowns, 2 picks and a passer rating of 109.7.
