Lawmakers Deny Pay Increase for Nebraska’s Constitutional Officers

Nebraska State Capitol (Jeff Motz/KFOR News)LINCOLN–(KFOR Mar. 18)–Nebraska Lawmakers on Tuesday voted against a plan to raise the annual salaries of the state’s constitutional officers by 29%.
An amendment would have raised the pay for the governor from $105,000 to $130,000 a year, attorney g
eneral would have seen an annual salary go from $95,000 to $120,000, the state auditor’s pay would have jumped from $85,000 to $110,000 a year. Most senators called it bad timing because of the current state budget crunch and shortfall.
Elmwood Senator Rob Clements’ amendment also fell four votes short of the 25 votes needed to be adopted. Lawmakers gave first-round approval to LB1210, which will allow Clements to negotiate a different increase before the end of the 60-day session.
