Woodford County family raising funds for diabetic alert dog for 8yearold girl
Mar 18, 2026
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A Woodford County family is working to bring added safety to their young daughter who lives with a serious medical condition.
Eight-year-old Atlas Redwine has Type 1 diabetes, a condition that requires constant monitoring of her blood sugar levels, including wh
ile she sleeps.
Her mother says sudden drops in blood sugar can happen quickly, and the technology they rely on to monitor those levels does not always catch the changes in time.
Now, the family is hoping to raise funds for a diabetic alert dog, a specially trained service animal that can detect dangerous blood sugar changes before monitoring devices can.
These dogs are trained to alert families early when blood sugar levels become unsafe, providing an added layer of protection at home, at school, and overnight.
Atlas’ mother says having a diabetic alert dog would not only improve her daughter’s safety but also give her more independence and peace of mind.
The family says they hope sharing Atlas’ story will raise awareness and support as they work to secure the life-changing companion. A GoFundMe page has been created to help raise funds for the dog.
