A 20-year-old college student from Chicago has been reported missing in Barcelona following a night out with friends during a trip to Spain, his family said. James “Jimmy” Gracey, a junior at the University of Alabama, was visiting friends who are studying abroad and went to a beachfront nig htclub called Shôko on Monday night, his mother wrote on a Facebook post verified by NBC Chicago. He was last seen by a friend inside the club around 3 a.m. Tuesday and didn’t return to the Airbnb where he was staying, his mother Teresa Gracey said. “The police have his phone but he didn’t make it back to the air bnb. Has anyone see him?” Gracey’s mother pleaded in the post shared to the Students in Barcelona 2026 Facebook group. It wasn’t immediately clear how police obtained Gracey’s phone. In a statement provided to NBC News, Catalonia Police said “We are conducting the initial checks and have taken a report in an open investigation. A call was received early yesterday morning, around 1:00 AM, reporting a possible disappearance. The disappearance was reported to have occurred on March 17, 2026, at 3:00 AM, in the Port Olímpic area.” According to the family’s statement, Gracey traveled to Barcelona over spring break to visit friends who were studying abroad. He was last seen outside of Shôko, a club in the Villa Olimpica area on Barceloneta Beach, wearing a white shirt, dark pants, and a chain with a gold rhinestone cross, the statement said. Family members told NBC Chicago Gracey was in Amsterdam over the weekend and got to Barcelona Monday morning. He is approximately 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs 175 pounds.
