SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A major software company cut hundreds of jobs in San Francisco last week. State filings indicate that software giant Atlassian laid off 252 people at its U.S. headquarters on Bush Street last week. ‘This is tone deaf’: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman roasted for tweet thanking code rs The job cuts went into effect Friday and are permanent, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice. The SF job cuts are part of a broader headcount reduction from the Australian software company behind collaboration tools like Jira and Trello. According to a memo from Atlassian CEO Mike Cannon Brookes, the company will be reducing its global workforce by 10% -- about 1,600 employees -- as part of an effort to fund development in artificial intelligence. The company's approach, according to Brookes, is not "AI replaces people." However, the CEO went on to say, "it would be disingenuous to pretend AI doesn't change the mix of skills we need or the number of roles required in certain areas. It does." Employees impacted by the job cuts will receive 16 weeks of pay with an additional week for each year with the company, prorated bonuses for FY26, $1,000 payment for returning corporate laptops, and a six-month extension of healthcare, among other benefits. The Atlassian layoffs are the latest in a wave of AI-related job cuts that have roiled the tech industry in the Bay Area and beyond so far this year. On Monday, it was reported that Meta would be cutting its workforce by 20% to finance its AI development. The Facebook parent company saw its stock price rise 3% on the news. ...read more read less
