SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A new ordinance that could see Amsterdam-style cannabis cafés popping up in San Francisco was introduced Monday. The ordinance, which was authored by Assemblymember Matt Haney and San Francisco Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, would build on previously passed legislation that al lows licensed cannabis lounges to serve food. Haney authored that legislation -- Assembly Bill 1775 -- which was passed in 2024 and signed into law last year. "This is going to help the struggling legal cannabis industry survive by expanding what they can offer consumers, and bring new energy to our nightlife economy." "This is common sense legislation to allow cannabis businesses to sell food and non-alcoholic beverages for onsite consumption," said Mandelman. "Cannabis cafés can support San Francisco's post-pandemic recovery, and they can help sustain a legal cannabis industry that struggles to compete with the unregulated illicit market." If the ordinance is adopted, San Francisco would become one of the first California cities to fully implement the model for expanded cannabis lounges authorized by state law. ...read more read less
