March 11, 2026: As part of the preliminary work for the second year of the South Dakota Department of Transportation’s Euclid Avenue reconstruction project in Pierre, some trees were taken out of the boulevards. Pierre Region Engineer Dean VanDeWiele said the trees had to be removed in order for all of the underground utilities to be installed, and the state will not be putting trees back in once the construction work is done. https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/2626/files/2026/02/031126-vandewiele1.mp3 VanDeWiele said interconnecting the light poles allows the traffic signals to talk to each other. https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/2626/files/2026/02/031126-vandewiele2.mp3 VanDeWiele said utilities weren’t the only things considered when making the decision to not plant trees back into the boulevard. https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/2626/files/2026/02/031126-vandewiele3.mp3 As part of the SDDOT’s $26.4 million project, weekly update meetings will be held on Wednesday mornings. Highway 1889 urban reconstruction project in Pierre is scheduled to start up again next week (March 2, 2026). During a recent public information meeting (Feb. 19, 2026), a question was asked about the speed limit in the area where work is being done. Pierre Region Engineer Dean VanDeWiele said because traffic will primarily be head-to-head rather than having two lanes going each direction, they are considering lowering the speed limit in the work zone. https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/2626/files/2026/02/022626-euclid-avenue1.mp3 VanDeWiele said another factor when considering whether or not to temporarily lower the speed limit in the work area is traffic flow. https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/2626/files/2026/02/022626-euclid-avenue2.mp3 Another question asked was whether or not traffic from construction equipment would be coming through the neighborhoods on either side of Euclid Avenue. Morris, Inc. Division Manager TJ Gallagher said their big trucks cannot travel through the residential areas. https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/2626/files/2026/02/022626-euclid-avenue3.mp3 Gallagher said once they start, Morris crews will be working Monday through Saturday until 7pm CT.
