Local animal shelters are trying to find fur-ever homes for the animals in their care during their Find Your Lucky Charm mega adoption event. The event will be held Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Towson Place Shopping Center, 1238 Putty Hill Ave., in what was formerly Walmart. The venu e was donated by Kimco Realty.  Petco Love is sponsoring the event and Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) is hosting. BARCS is an open admission animal shelter and the largest shelter in Maryland. Serving the Baltimore City area, they take in approximately 12,000 animals per year.  Bailey Deacon, chief philanthropy and communications officer at BARCS, said taking in so many animals can present challenges. “We are an open admission shelter so that means that whenever someone from Baltimore City needs a place for an animal to go, we are that resource and we never turn animals away. We can’t turn animals away,” Deacon said.  For the event, BARCS is teaming up with the Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Maryland SPCA), Baltimore County Animal Services, Humane Society of Carroll County and Humane Society of Harford County.  Katie Flory, community care and advocacy director for the Maryland SPCA, shared how the event serves a dual purpose.  “Not only is this event great because we can adopt out a lot of animals and bring people together at one time, it also raises all of our shelters’ visibility,” Flory said.  All adopters must bring a valid photo ID, proof of current address and be at least 18 years old. Adopters cannot bring outside pets to the venue.  While each shelter in attendance has different adoption processes, all adoption fees at the event will be waived.  Deacon said this decision was made because they would rather adopters’ money go to take care of the animal they just adopted.  Cat carriers, leashes and collars will be available to purchase, and donations will still be accepted.  Flory said there will be “over 100 to 150 animals” up for adoption at the event.  Along with the usual cats and dogs, some shelters might bring rabbits or turtles, depending on what types of animals the shelters currently have in their care. The event is not only for people looking to adopt, but those looking to learn more about animal welfare, volunteering or fostering.  “All of the shelters need adopters of course, but we also all need fosters,” Deacon said.  “We also always need volunteers; all of our shelters do,” Flory said.  The event will be held March 15 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Towson Place Shopping Center, 1238 Putty Hill Ave, in what was formerly Walmart. The venue was donated by Kimco Reality.  For more information on BARCS, click here.  ...read more read less
