Speed cameras that were recently installed in Oakland captured about 140,000 drivers going at least 11 miles an hour over the speed limits in 18 locations deemed the most dangerous throughout the city. Following a 60-day warning period, the city will begin issuing citations through the mail start ing Sunday. The Oakland Department of Transportation is overseeing the cameras and managing the data. The city said the cameras only capture images of license plates. The system is not connected to Oakland’s Flock cameras, and information is not shared with law enforcement unless required by law. Oakland is one of the seven pilot cities in California approved to use speed cameras, which includes San Francisco. The citations given out by the city of Oakland will range from $50 to $500, which is the highest penalty for drivers going more than 100 miles per hour.
