A video showing a group of middle schoolers surrounding an 11-year-old black girl on her bike at Poinsettia Park in Carlsbad has been shared hundreds of times by Wednesday. The girl’s mom, April Amor, confirmed these were Aviara Oaks Middle School students and the incident happened on Feb. 26. “I just want to go home,” her daughter says in the video while kids yell racial slurs and other expletives. After about two-and-a-half minutes of tension, she rolled her bike backwards, away from the group. A young boy pulled her bike back in and then 30 seconds later, someone slapped the girl in the face before she got off the bike and fought back. “She stood her ground,” Amor said. “I told my daughter, you don’t start fights, but you better finish them. And I’m proud. I’m proud of how she conducted herself.” Amor has been living in Carlsbad for 20 years. She said this incident speaks volumes about what it’s like living in a town where only one percent of residents are black. She’s grateful there’s video to show for it. “It’s out in the open, and we’re not going to let it go away,” she said. “I’m not going to let it go away. I want justice for my daughter.” Her daughter is at home. Amor said the kids in the video left apology notes on her doorstep Thursday. “But that’s not enough,” she said. “They need to be prosecuted. I want to see justice for my daughter and for all of the other children who have suffered the same type of treatment.” The Carlsbad Police Department and the Carlsbad Unified School District are investigating this and released a joint statement: The Carlsbad Police Department and Carlsbad Unified School District take incidents involving accusations of bullying, harassment, and discriminatory language that may be deemed as a hate crime seriously. We are committed to ensuring all members of our community, especially students, feel safe and respected.  Hundreds of people came from across San Diego County and even Los Angeles to support at Thursday night’s school board meeting. “You can’t stay silent about this,” Amor said. “It’s in your face. You have to address it. And I love and appreciate how everyone is coming together.” Amor is removing her daughter from the district and will homeschool her. ...read more read less
