ELIZABETH, Ind. (WISH) — A humane society in Harrison County is asking for the public’s help identifying a dog who died on March 6 after being found suffering severe
burns days earlier.
The River Valley Humane Society released the request to social media the day of the dog’s passing.
The black-and-white dog, renamed Phoenix by humane society staff, was found in Elizabeth with “burns and the smell of gasoline across his body.”
Staff rushed Phoenix to an emergency veterinarian for care. While there, they learned the dog had no collar and no microchip, and no one in the public recognized the dog.
Phoenix died two days after his rescue.
“We had hoped he would recover from his injuries. He deserved an opportunity to be safe and loved and happy. But it’s not to be,” the humane society wrote in a release.
River Valley opted for a necropsy to be performed on Phoenix at Purdue’s Diagnostic Laboratory in Dubois. After the necropsy, Phoenix will be cremated and his ashes will go back to River Valley.
The humane society is offering a reward for any information on Phoenix’s identity.
“We hope Phoenix knew and knows he was loved. He will never be forgotten,” they said.
Anyone with information was asked to contact River Valley Humane Society.
