Miners track team qualifies several for state in first meet of season
Mar 10, 2026
The Miners track and field team finished in third place at state last season.
Despite the strong result, Park City knew they’d have to replace a lot of production off that team.
Through the first meet of this season, everything appears to be going according to plan for the Miners.
Park City saw high turnout for the team this spring. They qualified 11 individuals and relay teams for the state meet at Friday and Saturday’s Snow Canyon Invitational in St. George, where they finished in third place as a team. The state meet won’t be held until mid-May at BYU.
Those who qualified for state early were Paige Warner in the 800m, Mallory Carter in the 100m, Leo Gorder in the 400m, Eli Warner 100m, Sam Labrin in the 3200m, the girl’s 4×100, 4×200 and 4x400m relay teams and the boy’s 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. All of the girl’s relay teams and the boy’s 4x400m relay team won their races.
“I was pretty happy with it,” said Miners head coach Dave Yocum. “It’s definitely a rebuilding year. We lost a lot of seniors, but we have a very good core of kids, and I’m pretty hopeful for how the season goes.”
Yocum tabbed Gorder, Warner and Labrin as some runners who will help replace the production lost from last season.
“I actually think we’re just as deep on the boys side,” Yocum said. “I’ve got some young kids that are going to make an impression.”
Park City will compete in weekend invitationals as the season wears on, looking to qualify other runners and field athletes for state. The Miners do not prioritize regional competition. Another big meet similar to Snow Canyon is the Pine View Invitational March 20 and 21.
Once runners qualify for state, the pressure is off for a bit, and they can work on their running. Qualifying early also gives runners and coaches the opportunity to pick and choose where to run, which can help runners stay fresh.
“We just have to work on trying to progress day by day,” Yocum said. “Try to be as as healthy and fit as we can for the last two weeks of the season.”
Yocum believes he’s got another top-five team in 4A. He wants to peak for the state meet, as last year’s team did.
The Miners last track and field state title came in 2014 on the girl’s side. The girl’s program also won titles in 2013, 2010 and 2005. The boy’s program won state titles in 1991 and 1992.
The defending 4A state champ is Pine View.
