SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WISH) — Notre Dame has announced funeral services for former football coach Lou Holtz, who passed away at the age of 89 on March 4. On January 30, Holtz’s family posted to Facebook, sharing that he was facing a health challenge. Holtz coached the Fighting Irish for 11 seasons, helping the program capture the national championship in the 1988 season. That championship is actually the last time the Fighting Irish have won the college football national title. Overall, Holtz won 249 games as a collegiate head coach, 100 of which were during his time (1986-96) at Notre Dame. In addition to Notre Dame, Holtz was a college football head coach at William Mary (1969-71), NC State (1972-75), Arkansas (1977-83), Minnesota (1984-85) and South Carolina (1999-2004). Holtz was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008. The university is holding a public visitation from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on campus. There will be a private funeral mass on Monday and Notre Dame says members of the community can watch the mass on a livestream. Following the mass, the public is welcome to honor Coach Holtz by assembling on Notre Dame Avenue as his family leads the funeral procession from Notre Dame Circle to the main entrance of the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Graveside services will be private at the request of the Holtz family. ...read more read less
