San Jose school closures threaten special education programs
Mar 09, 2026
SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- A large number of elementary schools in San Jose are still on the chopping block and could shut down as soon as this month.
The San Jose Unified School District was supposed to finalize its list of school closures by Thursday but is set to request an extension after disag
reements about which schools to close.
One option is closing schools with some of the lowest enrollment.
But families argue they are vital for students with behavioral and learning differences.
Thousands of parents here in San Jose are in limbo, not knowing which school their child will go to this time next year as SJUSD considers closing up to nine elementary schools.
Students, however, at special day classes at Carson Elementary are even more in limbo, with parents concerned that their new campuses won't have the same infrastructure in place for special ed classes.
Parent of two autistic sons, Rachel Wilkes, is preparing for their neighborhood school to close.

"It really worries us to relocate from something that's been working for my son," Wilkes said.
Carson Elementary has a special day class program, also known as special education.
The program is unique at Carson, parents say, and a lifeline for students who need socialization.
That can all change if the district approves closures.
Many of the options would close Carson and send its special ed program to another campus.
"As a mom with special needs children, I worry about a lot. I worry about their future, whether the world will be kind to them. Here at Carson, it's been our safety bubble," Wilkes said.
Carson only has 199 students. It’s the smallest school in the district.
But Wilkes says their special ed classroom has important additions like a built-in bathroom and an enclosed fence to protect special ed students if they wander off.

"The ideal school is the one you're used to, that you're familiar with, where your friends are," Embrey said. "The one you can stay at the full six years, seven years."
While the district says current enrollment doesn’t meet its definition of an "ideal school" and closes under multiple options, parents beg to differ.
While parents like how small the school is and its closeness to dozens of homes.
SJUSD has to make a decision soon. The district originally was supposed to decide by Thursday but may extend it to the end of the month.
