The 49ers made a major splash on the first day of the NFL’s free agency negotiating window. San Francisco agreed to a three-year, $60.4 million free-agent contract with star wide receiver Mike Evans, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday, citing sources. Schefter added that Evans, who has spent his entire 12-year NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who selected him with the No. 7 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, decided to leave Tampa Bay due to a desire for a “new challenge” as he enters the final years of his future Pro Football Hall of Fame career. Evans, 32, is a six-time Pro Bowl player, and up until the 2025 season, recorded at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first 11 NFL seasons, breaking 49ers icon Jerry Rice’s record for 1,000-yard seasons to begin a career. The veteran wideout missed 10 games last season with hamstring and collarbone injuries, recording just 30 receptions for 368 yards and three touchdowns in eight games with the Bucs. Tampa Bay released a statement shortly after news of the agreement, celebrating Evans’ career, which it plans to honor at some point in the future. Meanwhile, San Francisco, which is expected to release wideout Brandon Aiyuk at the start of the new league year on Wednesday, and likely will lose Jauan Jennings in free agency, adds a major piece to an uncertain wide receiver room.
