Marian University plans to turn former VA hospital into education hub
Mar 09, 2026
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A vacant, 22-acre property in Indianapolis that formerly housed a Veterans Administration hospital is being transformed into what’s being described as a cradle-to-career education hub, Marian University said in a news release issued Monday.
Known as The Grove at Cold
Spring, the site of the former Larue Carter Hospital, 2601 Cold Spring Road, will serve students ranging from early childhood through “adult credentialing,” the release said. In Indiana, adult credentialing programs provide free or low-cost training, certifications, and high school equivalency diplomas to help workers gain skills for high-demand fields.
The project is part of Marian University’s Riverside Education Innovation District initiative, which focuses on literacy and educational attainment through placemaking. The campus is designed to expand educational access and career pathways for families in the Near Northwest Area.
The hospital was built in 1931.
The release did not address the cost of the project. “Thanks to a lead gift from Lilly Endowment Inc., the historic Veterans Administration hospital building will be transformed into collaborative office space. Vincennes University and St. Mary’s Early Learning Center are some of the other partners on the property,” the release said.
Marian University is a private Catholic, Franciscan college. It boasts roughly 5,100 students.
