City of Berkeley Public Health issued an advisory Friday after two cases of mumps were reported at Berkeley High School. Authorities reported the date of the potential exposure at Berkeley High School was Feb. 19 and Feb. 20. Officials said the timing of the two cases raises the possibility of tr ansmission on campus from person to the other; however, they add there is no evidence of a community-wide spread of mumps at this time nor is there evidence of an outbreak. The health department said the incubation period for mumps is 25 days, meaning that symptoms should be monitored for 25 days after exposure. According to Cleveland Clinic, mild symptoms of mumps may include fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, painful swelling of salivary glands (located between ears and jaw), and loss of appetite. Other severe symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, confusion, stomach pain, vomiting and seizures. Health officials add mumps is considered a rare disease that can be prevented with the mumps vaccine. However, the Berkeley health department notes that it is possible for vaccinated people to still have mild or atypical symptoms. ...read more read less
