CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A contractor is accused of stealing a 100-ounce silver bar and more than $15,000 in jewelry from a Caroline County home he recently worked in. On Tuesday, March 3, a citizen in the Ruther Glen area reported that a 100-ounce silver bar and over $15,000 worth of jewelry had been stolen from them. Investigators with the Caroline County Sheriff's Office spoke with contacts in the jewelry industry and, within two hours of the initial call, learned that a 100-ounce silver bar had recently been sold to a refinery in Maryland, near the Delaware state line. From there, investigators connected the sale to 60-year-old Michael Joseph Smith of Orange County. Per the sheriff's office, Smith is a contractor who had recently performed work in the victim's home. Man’s body found in James River, Henrico police investigating Smith was taken into custody on Thursday, March 5, during a traffic stop. Caroline authorities charged him with grand larceny and larceny with intent to sell. "During the arrest, members of the Ashland Police Department located a pair of brass knuckles, suspected crack cocaine, suspected powder cocaine and prescription pills," the sheriff's office said. "As a result of these discoveries, the Ashland Police Department obtained additional charges against Smith."
