RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Early voting is underway in Virginia for a controversial mid-decade redistricting proposal that could reshape the state’s congressional map ahead of this year’s midterm elections. The proposed constitutional amendment would allow Democrats to redraw Virginia’s congre ssional districts, a move supporters say comes after Republican-led redistricting efforts in other states. If approved by voters, the plan would give Democrats a significant advantage in Virginia’s congressional delegation. It potentially could create a 10-to-1 split between Democrats and Republicans. Governor Abigail Spanberger and former President Barack Obama said they are in support of the amendment. "Make sure you get out and vote yes on the referendum to allow us to fight back against Donald Trump’s illegal power grab that’s happening in Texas and North Carolina, and re-enfranchise Virginia voters," said Don Scott, Democratic Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates. Republicans argue the proposal is an attempt to give Democrats an unfair political advantage and are urging Virginians to vote against it. "I hope that Virginians across the commonwealth come together and just vote no, and let's have this election fair and square," said Terry Kilgore, the Republican House Minority Leader.
