LEXINGTON, KY. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A Lexington nonprofit is working to support families struggling to afford basic necessities through its annual “Dollars for Diapers” campaign. The Nest – Center for Women, Children and Families hosts the campaign each year to collect diapers and raise fun ds that help provide essential supplies for families in need across the community. Emma Fryman, director of family assistance at The Nest, says the demand for diapers continues to grow. “People in the community need diapers, it’s a huge need and we’ve got the numbers to prove it,” Fryman said. Organizers say last year’s diaper drive collected more than 100,000 diapers to support families. The campaign runs throughout February and March and is designed to help stock supplies for the entire year. Josh Dispain, vice chair of The Nest’s board, says community support is critical because all of the items provided to families are completely free. “The services we provide in this drive go to our families 100% free,” Dispain said. “We really depend on the support of our community to help with these kinds of drives.” Diapers are one of the most essential — and costly — needs for families with young children. Dispain says it can cost about $50 a month to provide diapers for one child, a number that can quickly increase for families with multiple children. Through the program, families can visit The Nest during walk-in hours to receive assistance. Along with diapers, the organization also provides wipes, hygiene items, clothing, baby food and formula. Fryman says those resources help ensure children remain healthy and safe. “Diapers keep kids safe, they keep them healthy and clean, and it’s really, really important,” Fryman said. The Nest also operates a childcare program designed to support parents, including working mothers, in the community. Right now, organizers say the greatest need is for toddler-sized diapers and pull-ups.
