INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Patty Spitler reviewed the new Hoppers from Pixar and Walt Disney Pictures, awarding the animated film three and a half stars out of five.
The movie follows 19-year-old Mabel, who uses advanced technology to transfer her consciousness into a robo
tic beaver. The scientific breakthrough allows humans to hop into robotic animals to better understand and communicate with wildlife.
Spitler described the film as a rare original concept in an industry often dominated by sequels. The story centers on Mabel, who is struggling with anger and confusion after the death of her grandmother. Through the experimental technology, she places her mind into a mechanical beaver and begins communicating with animals.
Spitler called the film a “challenging and satisfying” experience that offers a human perspective on the natural world.
Although she usually isn’t a fan of animated films, Spitler praised the movie for its depth and character development. “There are many intriguing characters and situations,” she said, calling the film “fascinating and thought-provoking.”
The movie is rated PG and runs one hour and 45 minutes. Spitler said the length could be a challenge for younger viewers.
“For kids, an hour, 45 — an hour and a half max,” Spitler said, explaining why she did not award the film a higher four-star rating.
Spitler also noted the film arrives at a time when major animation studios have faced mixed results with recent releases. “This is something that Pixar and Disney really needed,” she said, adding the movie “elevates their standing after a few movies that didn’t do very well lately.”
