Marcus’ 4 a.m. Friday forecast
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Our unusually warm and active early March continues, with record temperatures today and severe storms possible on Saturday.
Today:
Widespread dense fog has developed across much of central Indiana, reducing visibility to less than ha
lf a mile. This is all due to deep moisture becoming trapped at ground level because of a temperature **inversion** (warmer temperatures aloft). This acts as a lid and keeps the moisture locked in at the surface. It should all lift by around midmorning as the sun comes up.
Once the fog moves out, temperatures will surge very quickly as warm air rushes into the state. High temperatures will top out in the mid to upper 70s, which is about 30° above average for this time of year. The record high for today in Indianapolis is 75°, set back in 1973.
Saturday storms:
Another round of rain and thunderstorms is expected to move into the area on Saturday. A strong storm system that’s producing severe weather across the central Plains on Friday will move into the Midwest for the start of the weekend. An additional half an inch to one inch of rainfall is expected, which will continue to aggravate flooding issues.
There is also a chance for some strong to severe thunderstorms. Much of the state is under a **Level 1** (out of 5) risk for severe weather, with damaging winds being the primary concern.
Storms should start to move out by mid to late afternoon, leaving drier weather for the remainder of the weekend.
Weekend forecast:
High temperatures will top out around 70° on Saturday. Cooler but drier air settles in for Sunday, with highs near 60°.
7 day forecast:
Quiet weather continues to start the week, but it will be short-lived. Highs will hit the low 70s on Monday with mostly sunny skies. Renewed chances for rain arrive Tuesday night into Wednesday, with the potential for heavy rain showers heading into Wednesday, which could worsen the current flooding situation.
Temperatures will remain well above average for most of next week. A cooldown is set to arrive by late next week, following our midweek rain.
