Del. community fighting to reopen shuttered SEPTA ticket window in Wilmington
Mar 05, 2026
Some community activists in Delaware are pleading with state and transportation leaders to reopen a SEPTA office and ticket window at the Wilmington train station.
They say that the closure has unfairly affected lower income residents but DelDOT and SEPTA argue that it costs a lot to run the off
ice while not enough customers were using it.
In the SEPTA budget crisis, Delaware came close to losing SEPTA train service altogether so many weren’t surprised when the ticket office in the Joseph R. Biden Jr. Railroad Station closed at the end of December.
It was one of 13 that closed across the SEPTA system.
“Use the kiosk. Tap on, tap off and to me that’s the quickest way to get to and get from,” SEPTA rider Raekwon Wilson said.
The Delaware Transit Coalition says that even though there are many ways to pay to use SEPTA, the office closing makes it harder for older and lower income riders.
“SEPTA offers a number of deep discounts particularly for senior citizens that can be issued there and they’re not issued there now. You have to go to downtown Philadelphia to get them and we would like to see the SEPTA ticket passes and other discounts be issued there, right at the SEPTA, DART ticket office,” John Flaherty, of the coalition, said.
The coalition explained to NBC10 that they think DelDOT could work harder to collect past due toll money and use that to reopen the office.
For DelDOT, they said that it costs $87,000 per year to run the office which only brought in $52,000 in revenue and only sold about 10 passes each day.
SEPTA reportedly provided the staffing for the office and DelDOT covered the rent.
“I sympathize with SEPTA. There is no doubt they have a lot of funding challenges but we are really asking the state of Delaware to step in and provide the services SEPTA can’t provide right now,” Flaherty said.
On Thursday, March 5, Wilmington City Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution that would help get the SEPTA ticket office to reopen.
