(Photo by Will Lester, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin/SCNG) Expand Wednesday afternoon, Temescal Canyon senior pitcher Jessenia Moore held Murrieta Mesa’s lineup to a run on five hits while striking out eight through six innings and took a 2-1 lead to the final frame. However, Murrieta Mesa rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh and hung on for the 4-2 victory to stay undefeated before heading to the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz., this weekend. “This was our biggest test of the year, and to put four runs up against an excellent pitcher like Moore gives me a good feeling going into this weekend,” Rams coach Antonio Romero said. “We just had to get the ball on the ground and use our speed to put pressure on the defense.” Murrieta Mesa (6-0) scored first in the top of the third inning. Mikaela Williams reached on a one-out single and then stole second base. With two outs, Rams starting pitcher Lilly Hauser drove a 3-2 pitch from Moore up the middle for an RBI single for the early lead. Hauser went 2 for 3 at the plate and also reached on an error for the Rams. Moore struck out the side in the top of the fourth but faced another Rams threat in the fifth inning. Gracy Zamora led off with a single and Tatum Wolff drove her first pitch to the left-center field wall for a double, giving Murrieta Mesa runners on second and third with one out. However, the Titans defense came up big as shortstop Brea Tillery displayed an impressive vertical leap in robbing Hauser of an hit, and Sami Olson came up with an over-the-shoulder catch in foul territory to keep the deficit to a single run. Temescal Canyon (5-2) got two runs off reliver Wolff in the fifth inning and went up 2-1. Olson reached on an error and scored on a double down the third-base line by Reagan Pickens to tie the game. Nia Hall’s two-out RBI single was the go-ahead hit for Temescal Canyon before Wolff snared a Tillery line drive to end the threat. Zamora led off Mesa’s top of the seventh with a single and stole second. Wolff scored her with a single and advanced to second on the throw home. Hauser added an RBI double to give the Rams the lead, and Macy Clark’s run-scoring single finished the scoring. Wolff was 2 for 4 at the plate along with throwing three innings in relief, allowing two runs on two hits. “I think it’s so amazing that coach Romero gives his pitchers the opportunity to hit and trusts us to be at the top of our lineup,” Hauser said. “We needed a game like this against a quality opponent before going to Bullhead this weekend and Temescal Canyon proved to be exactly that.” With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Temescal Canyon had an opportunity to tie things up after Makayla De La Riva was hit by a pitch and Hall was intentionally walked. Tillery singled to right field but Wolff, who switched to playing outfield when Jordan Cardona came on in relief, one-hopped a throw to Clark, who tagged out De La Riva as she was attempting to score to end the game. “That (playoff) run last year was exciting and one of the best years we’ve had in awhile, and with the core of that team back it’s about keeping that momentum,” Temescal Canyon coach Kayla Hill said. “We competed with a very good Murrieta Mesa team today, and I saw positives from our team that we can take into a Monday game against (Riverside) Poly and going forward.” Hall was 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead Temescal Canyon’s offense.
