New Jersey man convicted for driving SUV at pedestrians near the Washington Monument

The United States Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday that a Mantua, NJ man was found guilty in federal Superior Court. for an incident in July of 2021 when he reportedly drove his SUV onto the sidewalk near the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.
Federal prosecutors said that Jack Dessin, 43,
of Mantua, was found guilty by a jury of “assault with a dangerous weapon with a senior citizen enhancement.”
On July 3, 2021, Dessin drove his dark blue Ford Explorer onto the sidewalk near the Washington Monument, “where numerous pedestrians were walking and sightseeing,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. “While the 68-year-old victim was walking, Dessin accelerated his vehicle and drove directly at the victim, who struggled to jump over the wall for protection and had to be pulled out of the way by a family member.”
Dessin was arrested the same day and is being held pending his sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for May 15.
