Fontana boys soccer team routs Hilltop in CIF State playoff opener
Mar 03, 2026
FONTANA — The Steelers clearly are more comfortable at home.
Luis Ceballos and Iseah Gonzalez Cano scored in the first 30 minutes, and Josue Hernandez and Dario Alcala added goals in the second half as Fontana’s boys soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over visiting Chula Vista Hilltop on Tuesday i
n a CIF Division II regional quarterfinal match.
“We like it better here,” goalkeeper Christopher Alejandre said. “We prefer to play way more at home because of all the support, and all our fans and family.”
The win comes three days after Fontana’s 4-1 loss to Santa Monica in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship match on Saturday at El Modena High in Orange.
“What’s at stake now is absolutely bigger, right?” Fontana coach Rigo Isarraras said. “Can we compete at the state level? We’re going to give it a good try.”
Alejandre made five saves in the victory for the Steelers (23-6-0), who now move on to play at Bakersfield Mira Mote in the regional semifinals Thursday.
“This helps us bounce back and get further into this competition and maybe win this one,” Alejandre said. “They gave us another chance so now we still have something to prove and achieve.”
Ceballos gave Fontana a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute with a headed goal from a set piece, and Alejandre made a kick save in a one-on-one in the 21st minute to keep Hilltop off the scoreboard.
Cano grabbed Fontana’s second in the 30th minute, tapping in a rebound after Hilltop goalkeeper Nolan Butcher deflected the ball toward the middle where the Steelers’ midfielder was credited with the final touch over the line.
Hilltop coach Jesus Acevedo admitted to experiencing a championship hangover after the Lancers (8-12-7) captured their first CIF San Diego Section Division 1 title following overtime and a shootout over the weekend.
“I saw some heavy legs tonight,” Acevedo said. “We expected a lot but we know they just played the whole 80 minutes plus overtime plus PKs the other night, and it took a little bit of a toll. I know it took a toll on myself and the coaching staff.”
Acevedo’s side came out of halftime more composed and a corner kick provided the pressure necessary for a breakthrough after Fontana was unable to find an effective clearance. Alejandre was quick with a save on a blistered first shot, and another attempt was blocked before Victor Ruiz put his laces through the ball to get Hilltop a goal in the 48th minute.
“We had some chances (and) we could have made it a little tighter at 2-1 but taking nothing away from Fontana,” Acevedo said. “They are a good squad. They completely finished their opportunities.”
Playing with unshakeable confidence in front of the home crowd, Hernandez restored Fontana’s two-goal lead with a first-time finish on a cross through the box from Omar Amaro just 4 minutes later.
Adding to the tally, Alcala rose above Hilltop’s defense to head down a corner kick and score inside the near post for Fontana’s fourth goal in the 77th minute.
In a rare and exciting second half that produced more scoring opportunities (11) than fouls (nine), the Steelers totaled seven of their postseason-high 12 shots on goal.
