HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Superior Plus Propane customers are experiencing continued delivery issues after an increase in demand during harsh winter conditions. Darrell Lundy has called Henrico home for eight years. Since moving in, he has relied on propane to heat his home, water, fireplace a nd generator. For the past few years, international company Superior Plus Propane has been responsible for his deliveries. The company bought Quarles Fuel in 2022 along with other fuel companies. Lundy said he never had a problem with his propane tank getting low until this winter, when Central Virginia saw abnormally low temperatures. “Because of Mother Nature and the ice and the storms and the conditions here in Richmond, it took a little bit more and drained a lot faster than usual,” Lundy said. Because of this, the fuel he purchased last year wasn't enough to get him through this winter. When he noticed he was at risk of running out, he reached out to Superior Plus Propane. Similarly, Bentonville resident Kelly Smith also found herself running low on propane quicker than she thought. Unlike Lundy, she didn't notice she was running low and ended up running out in January and needed an emergency fill. “It was very scary," Smith said. In February, 8News learned that dozens of Virginians either ran out of propane or were close to it because of fuel delays. During this time, Lundy and Smith were able to make orders for more fuel. Lundy ordered 325 gallons for his 400-gallon tank, and Smith ordered 500 gallons for her 1000-gallon tank. However, when the delivery truck arrived, they were only given 200 gallons. Neither said they were warned that the company was only giving out 200 gallons. “If they went to a gas station and they paid for $60 worth of gasoline to go in their car, and they only got 35 gallons, they would want the remaining money for the gas that they paid for," Lundy said. Both told 8News they tried to call the company several times. When they got ahold of someone, they said they were unable to learn when the rest of their propane would arrive. In the meantime, they were given a credit. “Why did you charge me for 500 when I could only receive 200?” Smith said. 8News reached out to Superior Plus Propane on behalf of Lundy and Smith. A spokesperson shared the following statement: We sincerely apologize to customers who experienced delays or partial deliveries during periods of high demand. We understand how concerning it is to not receive the full amount of propane requested, particularly during cold weather. During a brief period, we implemented temporary delivery limitations in parts of Virginia to help ensure safe and reliable service for as many customers as possible, avoiding service interruptions. In some cases, this resulted in partial fills. Customers who pre-pay for deliveries and received partial fills can use their credit toward a subsequent delivery or request a refund. Our top priority is delivering propane safely and maintaining the trust of the customers we serve. We are also reviewing our processes to improve communication during periods of constrained capacity. ...read more read less
