GARAGE TO OPEN: A five-level, $58 million garage with 644 parking spaces at the Metro Express bus station at Southwest 168th Street has received a county temporary certificate of occupancy and is to be open in March, the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust was told last week. “We are now working through our safety and plans, certification, and the traffic signal inspection for the signal coming in and out of the garage,” Alex Barrios of the county’s transportation department said. “We have a planned opening date for next month.” The site has a kiss-and-ride area, bicycle storage and electric vehicle charging. TAX RELIEF LATER: Gov. Ron DeSantis said the effort to offer voters property tax relief will require time beyond the regular session of the legislature. With the regular 60-day session set to end March 13, he said that despite the House approving property tax relief legislation, the Senate agrees with him that the creation of a November ballot item on homestead property taxes will be addressed after that date. “I applaud the House for getting into this fight. I think they’ve got a lot of folks that brought forth a lot of good ideas,” Mr. DeSantis said last week. “But what I’ve also said, and I said from the beginning, I didn’t see this necessarily happening in this regular session. And I think the Senate agrees with that. We’re going to be coming back. There’s going to be opportunities to be doing it. I think you have to do it right.” LESS ON OUR PLATES: A proposal to eliminate yellow vehicle registration stickers on vehicle license plates was approved by the House 93-17. The proposal would still require people to renew vehicles’ registration, with the process recorded electronically. Miami Lakes Rep. Tom Fabricio said his proposal, which was recommended by county Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez, will be “cutting yellow tape, an additional burden for motorists.” A House staff analysis doesn’t put an economic impact figure on the bill but notes the Miami-Dade Tax Collectors Office estimated going digital would save the office $2.5 million a year to record registrations and renewals. In voting against the measure, Rep. Yvonne Hinson said the state needs to cover a $2.50 service charge that tax collectors use to offset staffing costs that would be eliminated with the bill. GAS PRICE RISES SEEN: Average gas prices in Miami rose 1 cent per gallon in the past week to $2.89, according to GasBuddy, which predicted prices above $3 a gallon within a week as war in Iran changes expectations. Prices in Miami are now 2 cents a gallon lower than a month ago. These are some of the FYIs in this week’s edition.
