Supporters and opponents of US strikes on Iran rally on Monument Circle INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Demonstrations in support of and against the U.S. strikes on Iran have popped up around the country, including in Indianapolis. On Monday on Monument Circle, dozens of protesters held signs that sa id “Stop the War on Iran” and “Hands off Iran.” Off to the side, a handful of Iranian-Americans disagreed. They screamed and waved their Iranian and U.S. flags, demanding human rights and freedom for the Iranian people. Hassan Mikankhah supports the U.S. strikes on Iran. He stood feet away from anti-war protesters. “These people protesting they don’t trust their country. They don’t know what they have.” Mikankhah said he lived in Iran for years but had to leave because of the repressive regime. He said the anti-war protesters don’t know what it’s like in Iran and how badly people are treated. He thinks a U.S. attack is necessary for a regime change. He’s not alone. Parisa Kay left Iran when she was 20 years old. “I lived there, under that regime. They took me to prison. They beat me up for a strand of hair sticking out of my scarf. So for nothing, they can take you, beat you up, rape you, execute you.” President Donald Trump said the strikes will prevent the nuclear threat from Iran. But anti-war protesters don’t think the U.S. should meddle in other countries’ affairs. They’ve protested at least twice since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday. Cecilia Gomez, organizer at Indy Liberation Center Right said, “Now the U.S. and Israel have started the war with Iran completely unprovoked, and it’s costing us money, our taxpayer money. It’ll cost the lives of Americans and people around the world, so if we can avoid it, which we can, we have to.” “The U.S. is involving itself in another war that is not sustainable. We’ve seen various wars in the past two decades that have brought devastation in the region they occupy,” said Riley Park, an anti-war protester. ...read more read less
