In San Francisco, Iranian Americans came together with hope a day after strikes by the U.S. and Israel killed Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several of the country’s other top leaders.
“We are going to get our country back,” Parviz, who lives in Santa Clara, said. “I s
tarted crying, free Iran. Finally, all the people of Iran are free.”
There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding what comes next, but on Sunday, Iran named Ayatolah Alireza Arafi to the country’s Interim Leadership Council.
The Pentagon confirmed that three U.S. service members were killed and at least five others wounded.
Members of Congress have been split on party lines in their assessment of the strikes, and Democrats are pushing for the administration to seek congressional approval and raising concerns about President Donald Trump’s approach.
Among them, north Bay Area Congressman Mike Thompson.
“Congress has a responsibility congress has a legal obligation to participate in any decision to go to war and congress should have been included in this discussion and congress should be made aware of what it is this president thinks is the immediate threat that would necessitate going to war,” Thompson said.
“We should know what his plan is and what the long term plan is, and what the exit strategy is, without that, I fear we are going to be another forever war that is going to cost us both in human life and our treasury, we have already seen sadly that we have lost us military lives and other soldiers have been injured,” he continued.
Thompson is among those calling for a vote on the war powers resolution.
Officials tell NBC News Congress will get its first set of briefings on Iran on Tuesday.
