Mayfield Village starts crafting Tuesdays for seniors
Feb 28, 2026
Mayfield Village seniors can start the week in a creative way by attending the newly formed “do your own thing — Crafty Tuesdays.”
The new adults-only craft program lets people decide what they want to make with the end result usually shaped by what supplies people bring or what the village ha
s on hand.
Parks and Recreation Director Shane McAvinew said they wanted to let the people who attend the program shape the direction it goes in, and a key benefit was it gave them a place to form new friendships. Classes start at 10:30 a.m. in the Mayfield Village Community Room, 6621 Wilson Mills Road.
Because donations of supplies help supplement the program they are able to offer it for free and although they encourage registration beforehand, anyone can walk in if they want to participate.
“We ask people that if they have crafts they want to bring in and can help with the program that they bring in crafts,” McAvinew said. “The group then each week talks about what crafts they are going to do the following week and that helps bring the supplies in. So, we’re just facilitating activities, and doing it for free, and it’s more of a social group.
“We’re going to run it every Tuesday for now and see how it goes,” McAvinew continued. “One of the things for developing the programming is listening to people and find commonalities of what people want and work with that, so as long as it’s going well, we will keep it.
“We might take it back off in the summer, like we do with our watercolor program, because people take a break of indoor activities.”
He said they run programs around the same time so that staff levels are consistent giving them more options for residents.
Looking ahead to the summer, residents will still have lots of things to do, as their parks will be open for people of all ages.
“My thing is let’s fill the building, let’s do as many activities as possible,” McAvinew said. “In the summertime if you look at a list there’s probably six or seven different things going on simultaneously during the evening hours. There’s softball, bocce, tennis, soccer, pickleball, our playground is full and corn hole boards for people.”
