Princeton U. men’s lacrosse looking to make statement with IvyACC weekend sweep
Feb 28, 2026
Princeton men’s lacrosse coach Matt Madalon knew this Ivy-Atlantic Coast Conference weekend was going to be a great barometer to where the team is and which way it’s headed.
After Friday’s 11-7 win over No. 6 Syracuse, the No. 7 Tigers now look to measure up against No. 1 North Carolina on Sun
day.
Princeton (2-1) used a staunch defense to turn back the Orange (3-2), while UNC (5-0) defeated No. 19 Penn, 11-9, on Friday night.
After an emotional win over then-No. 2 Maryland last weekend, the Tigers let the defense dictate the game and it kept the Orange at bay.
“We have to keep getting better,’’ Madalon said. “We have to do a better job of cutting down the mistakes.’’
Offensively, the Tigers have been spreading around the goals as for the second straight game no player had more than two.
Chad Palumbo leads the team in points with nine on four goals and five assists., Nate Kabiri has four goals and three assists, Peter Buonanno also has four and three and Tucker Wade has the lead in goals with five.
Ryan Croddick had 14 saves in the win over the Orange and Andrew McMeekin was 10-of-19 on face-offs.
“It’s a big weekend. We have all been looking forward to this Ivy-ACC weekend,’’ said Madalon. “Everyone will find out a lot about your team.’’
The Tigers have learned they can respond to adversity, like it did in the win over Maryland, that they have a number of players who can find the back of the net, a solid goaltender capable of making that game-saving play and a defense that welcomes every challenge.
But, Madalon knows it’s just March and improvement is always needed.
“This has to be another week that we get better, better offensively, better defensively and we have to clean up between the lines and be more productive at the face -off x and get some stops early,’’ stated Madalon. “It’s about getting better for us.’’
The Tar Heels saw Dominic Pietramala, who is the son of Lacrosse Hall of Fame member and former Johns Hopkins and Cornell coach Dave Pietramala, score five goals in the win over the Quakers.
Pietramala now has 17 goals on the season and Owen Duffy, with 24 points on 10 goals and 14 assists, leads North Carolina.
