INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The National Weather Service at Indianapolis has confirmed a third tornado from storms that moved across the state a week ago. A small tornado touched down west of Greensburg in Decatur County on Feb. 19, according to a National Weather Service damage survey. No injuri es or property damage were reported during the brief evening event. The tornado was assigned a rating of EFU, a designation used for tornadoes that do not cause damage that would allow for a wind speed estimate. The National Weather Service confirmed the touchdown through video footage of the storm. The Decatur County tornado began at 8:35 p.m. Feb. 19 approximately 3 miles west of Greensburg. It traveled northeast for nearly a mile before lifting 2 miles west of the city 2 minutes later. The storm reached a maximum width of 25 yards along its 0.92-mile path. Because the tornado did not strike any structures or trees, the weather service could not estimate its peak wind speeds. Greensburg is about a hour’s drive southeast of downtown Indianapolis. Previously, the weather service reported on two Feb. 19 tornadoes that left damage but no injuries. The one in Bloomington, initially assessed as an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, was upgraded to an EF-2. The maximum wind speed was 120 mph. It touched down west of the Monroe County Airport at 6:57 p.m. Thursday, lasted nine minutes, had a maximum width of a three-quarters of a mile, and traveled nearly 4 miles. The other tornado, in Sullivan County, traveled in a rural area between the unincorporated community of Paxton and and the town of Carlisle. Classified as EF-0, the maximum wind speed was 85 mph. It touched down at 5:25 p.m. Thursday, lasted seven minutes, had a maximum width of 2-1/2 football fields, and traveled just over 4 miles. The three tornadoes were the first of the year in Indiana. A total of 13 tornado warnings were issued for Indiana on Feb. 19. Much of the southern half of Indiana, including Indianapolis was put under a tornado watch before the storms arrived.
