WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) — Thursday night’s top-15 matchup in Mackey Arena lived up to the marquee billing as No. 13 Michigan State needed every second on the clock to beat No. 8 Purdue, 76-74.
This marks the first time the Spartans have won inside Mackey Arena since 2014.
The Boile
rs started the game strong, running out to a 13-6 lead at the first media time out. Purdue senior center Oscar Cluff accounted for eight of those 13 points. Then the Spartans started to get settled in. Tom Izzo’s crew rattled off a 10-0 run to take the lead with 12:28 left in the first half.
The two teams traded blows the rest of the half until Purdue sophomore guard Gicarri Harris drained a three-pointer to put the Boilers up 5 with 57 seconds on the clock. After a couple of Spartan free throws, the Boilers held on a 3-point lead at the break.
Michigan State took over in the second half, leading by as many at eight with 4:11 left in the game. Thanks to back-to-back buckets by Purdue senior guard Braden Smith, the Boilers cut the lead to two and held it there down to the last second.
Smith took the last shot deep at the top of the key, but it was too strong.
Smith finished the game with 12 points and 10 assists. An early goaltending call in favor of Kaufman-Renn’s shot gave Smith his 1,000th career assist, making him just the fifth player in NCAA history to reach that milestone.
Boilers redshirt freshman guard Jack Benter had the next highest points with 11, while Cluff and Kaufman-Renn each ended with 10.
Senior center Cooper Carson led the Spartans attack with 15 points and six rebounds. Kur Teng, Jeremy Fears Jr., and Coen Carr all scored in the double figures, as well.
Next up, the Boilers head to Ohio State Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Eastern.
