SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A progressive political group is pushing back on San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie's account of an antisemitic chant heard at an event Wednesday. According to Mayor Lurie, a group at the event began chanting "tax the rich" before shifting into shouting "tax the Jews." The inc ident occurred at an event Lurie said he was putting on with Supervisor Bilal Mahmood, local labor leaders and workers to announce a plan to create more jobs and housing in the city. Photos released of duo sought in SF Marina District assault "Suggesting that Jews are wealthy is a tired trope, and targeting our community at an event focused on creating economic opportunity for San Franciscans is decidedly antisemitic," Lurie tweeted. "I will never accept hate directed at the Jewish community or any community in our city. Those are not San Francisco values." However, the Democratic Socialists of San Francisco pushed back on the mayor's account that it was a "group of individuals." According to the DSA, that antisemitic remarks came from one woman who was not a member of the group. "During today's protest of the Prop 1 repeal, a non-member joined the crowd and spouted disgusting antisemitic remarks," said the DSA in a statement. "DSA members and other protesters asked her to stop, but she refused." "We want to be clear that whatever hate she holds isn't shared by DSA members and we categorically reject antisemitism," the group added. While KRON4 has not independently confirmed the mayor or the DSA's differing accounts, social media video from the scene does support the claim that it was one person chanting "tax the Jews," and not a group. In the video, a group of people can be heard chanting "tax the rich" before a single, female-sounding voice joins in with a chant of "Tax the Israel" before shifting to "Tax the Jews." "DSA SF members at the protest were similarly disgusted and horrified by this woman's rhetoric," the DSA said in response to Lurie's tweet, "and want to make clear her words came from her alone. While we disagree on policy, we join the Mayor in condemning antisemitism." San Franciso Supervisor Jackie Fielder, who represents the city's 9th district also weighed in. "I've spoken with multiple people present at the protest," Fielder tweeted. "Here are the facts: a mentally unstable woman -- known to construction workers in the area -- chanted anti semitic remarks while DSA members chanted 'Tax the Rich.'" Lurie's characterization of events has drawn widespread condemnation with everyone from California Gov. Gavin Newsom to San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan condemning the chant. State Sen. Scott Wiener called it "vile but tragically not surprising." Wednesday's event took place at a construction site in the Lower Nob Hill area. A representative from Mayor Lurie's office told KRON4 that the mayor's statement was a reflection of what was said, rather than who said it. ...read more read less
