East Rock/Fair Haven Alder Caroline Tanbee Smith and Downtown/East Rock Alder-elect Christine Kim traded City Hall duties for snow shovels Wednesday, as they cleared a bus stop outside the Dunkin’ at 889 State St. after hearing what they described as “numerous concerns” from riders struggling to access it. The stop, buried under packed snow following Monday’s blizzard, had become difficult — and potentially unsafe — for people waiting for buses. Smith and Kim said bus stops, fire hydrants, and curb ramps have been some of the most difficult areas to get shoveled during heavy snowfall, often falling outside routine residential clearing. At this location, they also shoveled out the curb area to make it easier and safer for riders to step on and off buses. Their effort was part of a broader neighborhood snow-clearing initiative Smith has organized in previous years and relaunched this winter. Through the program, more than 80 residents have signed up through a Google Form to help neighbors dig out sidewalks, driveways, cars, and shared public spaces — particularly assisting elderly residents and those unable to shovel themselves. Smith and Kim have also posted updates and photos of their snow-clearing efforts on their social media accounts to spread awareness of the program. “This year compared to other years has felt like infrastructure,” Smith said, describing how the volunteer network has grown into a more coordinated community resource. “People have been energized to support people they don’t even know.” Smith said volunteers often shovel early during storms so that if snowfall continues, critical areas like bus stops and curb ramps do not become impassable later. Kim, who was joined by her two children as they helped shovel the stop Wednesday afternoon, said the program reflects a broader spirit of neighborhood care. “I’m glad it’s here as a community resource,” Kim said. The alders said the initiative has built momentum beyond individual snowstorms, strengthening connections among neighbors while addressing gaps left by traditional snow removal. Volunteers, they said, have helped clear paths for bus riders, opened access to fire hydrants, and ensured safer walkways throughout the neighborhood. Smith and Kim said they are open to expanding the program in future winters as participation continues to grow. Before it was shoveled Smith and Kim.
