Sentencing in Wallace Marine Park attack The original story: A knife attack and robbery at Wallace Marine Park last August left a man’s face with multiple injuries, including two broken bones and a cut to his nose. More than a week after the Aug. 3 attack, Salem police officers arrested Frank D. Eckel, 29, and charged him with first-degree robbery, second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. The latest: Last week, Polk County Circuit Court Judge Rafael Caso sentenced Eckel to more than 10 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of robbery and assault. Eckel was also sentenced to three years of post-prison supervision, the sentencing document said. Another denial of reconsidering charges for DEA agent  The original story: In January, a panel of federal appeals judges upheld the dismissal of a criminal charge initially filed against an agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency who, while driving during a surveillance operation, ran a stop sign and caused a crash that killed bicyclist Marganne Allen. The agent, Samuel Landis, had faced one count of criminally negligent homicide before a federal judge dismissed the charge in 2025. The latest: The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld the dismissal in January. Around two weeks later, a state justice department attorney asked for the entire appeals court to rehear the state’s case to charge Landis. On Feb. 18, the request was denied after no judge on the court asked to rehear the case, the ruling said. Guilty plea in stabbing of landscaper The original story: At a January Salem City Council meeting, Victor Hernandez-Lopez,  landscaper, testified about being the victim in a Jan. 7 stabbing and showed his fresh wounds to city officials. The man accused in the attack, Jonathon L. Jones, was arrested the day of the stabbing and charged with first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. The latest: After Jones was initially scheduled to go to trial this week, he instead pleaded guilty to two criminal charges for stabbing Hernandez-Lopez. On Feb. 20, Jones pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and unlawfully using a weapon, Marion County Circuit Court records show. Prosecutors are recommending a nearly six-year sentence. Man pleads guilty to murdering woman in 2024 The original story: When a Salem woman, Carla F. Vasquez, 28, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in May 2024, the Salem Police Department asked for the public’s help in gathering information. That led to the arrest of Atilano Davalos III one month later, who was charged with second-degree murder. The latest: Davalos, 40, pleaded guilty last week to second-degree manslaughter constituting domestic violence, the plea document shows. His sentencing is scheduled for March 3, and prosecutors plan to recommend no more than a nine-year sentence, according to Marion County court records.
