New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) will be closed for a third consecutive day Wednesday as the district prepares for more snow while continuing to clean up from Monday’s blizzard. NHPS posted that update on its website at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. It also sent an email to staff and families. “Given the forecast for snow during school arrivals tomorrow, and because crews must continue the work of cleaning up after Monday’s blizzard, all New Haven Public Schools will be closed again tomorrow, Wednesday, February 25,” the notice states. “This includes before and after school programs. We must continue our work to ensure safe conditions for students and staff.” Click here to read more about the district’s decision to stay closed on Tuesday and about how this spate of snow days will affect extend the district’s academic calendar later into June. A citywide parking ban that began on Sunday also remains in effect, thereby allowing New Haveners to continue to park for free in public school lots. Update: According to an email/text alert sent out by Mayor Justin Elicker at 7 p.m., the parking ban will be lifted at 6 p.m. Wednesday. See below for Elicker’s 7 p.m. message in full. NHPS spokesperson Justin Harmon told the Independent Tuesday around 7:30 p.m that the district has completed most of the school lot plowing. He added “We are also working on snow removal, which is different work, to reduce snow piles in order to make the general area safer. Removal entails loading snow on trucks and removing it to assigned locations. We will finish the remaining lots after the parking ban is lifted.” Harmon said tomorrow’s expected snow could slow down the district’s ongoing removal of snow piles around schools. Mayor’s Blizzard Update Another 1 to 3 inches is in the forecast for Wednesday morning, and New Haven Public Schools will remain closed tomorrow.  The citywide parking ban will remain in effect through Wednesday 6 pm. If you parked your vehicle at a New Haven Public School parking lot, please remove it by Wednesday 6 pm so that our plows can finish clearing those lots before the start of school on Thursday.   In addition to continuing snow plowing operations, tonight we’re also beginning snow removal operations. With snow removal, we physically remove the snow by loading it into dump trucks and moving the snow to nonpopulated parks and underutilized lots. Every night, we’ll be removing snow in the downtown area and then during the daytime hours we’ll be removing snow from streets in other neighborhoods.   As I’m sure you’ve experienced with your own shoveling, it’s a lot of snow, it’s heavy snow, and it’s hard to move. Our crews are doing the best they can given the historic nature of this storm and are working to make as many passes as possible to plow and push back the snow across our 235+ miles of roadway. Thank you for your continued patience.  I also appreciate everyone pitching in by shoveling their walkways, curb cuts, fire hydrants and bus stops that are near their properties and helping their neighbors in need.   Otherwise, for time-sensitive snow-related concerns or questions, please continue to call the city’s Emergency Operations Center at 203-946-8221. The EOC is staffed with representatives from various city departments and partner organizations throughout the duration of the storm to respond to pressing issues. Thank you and have a good night.  The post School’s Out For … Wednesday appeared first on New Haven Independent. ...read more read less
