Fayette County school board sets special meeting amid superintendent scrutiny
Feb 24, 2026
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Fayette County Public Schools board has scheduled a special meeting for March 4 after meeting in closed session for nearly two hours Monday night, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.
Board chairman Tyler Murphy declined to say what was discussed in the closed session but
announced the special meeting would take place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The meeting comes as the board weighs its response to an investigative report that found Superintendent Demetrus Liggins committed multiple policy violations related to district finances. Attorney Leigh Latherow, hired by the board, found Liggins failed to comply with policies governing the superintendent’s duties, budget planning and board governance as the district faced a projected $16 million shortfall.
Liggins has acknowledged he relied too heavily on his finance team rather than pressing for more detailed information about the district’s budget situation. On Monday, he pushed back on continued criticism, saying the budget has since been stabilized.
Several community members attended the meeting to voice support for Liggins, citing academic gains and equity initiatives during his tenure.
Murphy has said the board “anticipates making a determination on appropriate corrective measures in the coming weeks.”
