With the franchise and transition tag deadline a week from Tuesday, Gang Green is prepared to use it on Breece Hall. Jets general manager Darren Mougey said on Tuesday that they will use one of the tags if they cannot reach a long-term deal with the running back. “The tags are an option,” Mougey said during his press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine. “Ideally, we’d find a way to get a deal done and keep Breece around. I think I’ve said that for the last year since I’ve got here. “Breece is a good player. We want to find a way to keep him around. We’ve been going through that process and are still doing so. We have a week to find out if we can’t get to an agreement, which way we’ll go with that tag. We’ll find a way to keep Breece here.” There are three different tags the Jets could use on Hall. They could place him with the exclusive franchise tag, which would prevent him from negotiating with other teams. The Jets could also apply a non-exclusive franchise tag to Hall, which would allow him to negotiate with other teams. If Hall were to sign an offer sheet elsewhere on the non-exclusive franchise tag, the Jets have the right to match it or receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. The transition tag is similar to the non-executive franchise tag. However, unlike the non-exclusive franchise tag, if a team decides not to match an offer sheet from another team, the Jets wouldn’t receive any draft-pick compensation. Franchise tag salaries are based on the top five annual salaries at each position. Hall would be projected to make $14.5 million in 2026, the franchise tag salary for running backs this year, according to OverTheCap.com.  The transition tag is projected at $11.7 million for running backs. The Jets and Hall will have until July 15 to agree to a long-term deal, or he must play the 2026 season under the franchise tender. The deadline for teams to place franchise or transition tenders is March 3, a week before the negotiation period (March 9). That’s a 48-hour window before the new league year begins (March 11). With all the Jets’ uncertainty at the quarterback position over the last four seasons, Hall, 24, has been one of their best offensive weapons. Last season, he finished with 1,065 rushing yards and four touchdowns and caught 36 passes for 350 yards and a receiving touchdown. Hall became the first Jets player since 2015 (Chris Ivory) to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. It was also a rebound season for Hall after he told reporters last spring that he played through a “pretty serious” left knee injury that persisted throughout the end of the 2024 season. Despite the injury, he only missed one game that season. However, Hall’s rushing yards fell from 994 yards to 876 in 2024, which is the second-fewest rushing yards of his career. During his four seasons, Hall has averaged 1,230 all-purpose yards per season. In 2022, Hall had just 463 rushing yards and four touchdowns in seven games after tearing his ACL. “I get the sense that Breece wants to be here,” Mougey said. “We’ve had good conversations throughout the season, after the season. So just finding a way to do that.” Mougey was also asked about Justin Fields and the Jets quarterback situation. The Jets signed him to a two-year, $40 million contract last offseason. But following a 3-14 season in which he was benched after nine starts, the expectation is that Fields will be released this offseason after he struggled mightily. But Mougey says they are still evaluating options and they have no “trigger date” on when they need to decide on Fields. “Justin is on the roster and just like every other position, we’re gonna evaluate the quarterback position, through every landscape,” Mougey said. “Whether that’s trade, on the street, free agency, to see what we can add to the team. “But Justin is under contract. Glad he’s under contract.” ...read more read less
