The Browns’ entourage, led by general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Todd Monken, are ready for a visit to the candy store in Indianapolis this week. In other words, the NFL Scouting Combine. The Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium begins Feb. 23 and runs through March 2. On-field testing begins Feb . 26 with defensive linemen, linebackers and kickers. Defensive backs and tight ends are on the field Feb. 27, followed by quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs on Feb. 28. Offensive linemen go through testing March 1. The Browns own 10 picks in the three-day draft that begins April 23 in Pittsburgh. That number is likely to change, given Berry’s history of draft-day trades, but for now the Browns own picks 6, 24, 39, 70, 107, 139, 144, 147, 205 and 248. Holding four of the top 70 picks is a good way to begin the Monken era. Berry said he is approaching the offseason as though he were running an expansion team after finishing 3-14 in 2024 and 5-12 in 2025. “That’s just what we’re projecting based on the amount of draft resources we have and then probably just anticipated activity and free agency — that combined with having a very young defense, we would anticipate that we’d be a very young team,” Berry said. “We’re not necessarily going to be in the phase where we’re going to sign a bunch of mid-30s veterans to put us over the top, so to speak.” Unfortunately for the Browns — what else is new? — the 2026 draft does not cater to Berry’s biggest needs on offense. Regarding offensive tackle, arguably the Browns’ most glaring need, Ben Solak of ESPN concluded the upcoming draft is “a good year to need a starter for 2027 and a bad one to need a starter for 2026.” Two tackles have been linked to the Browns with their first pick — Francis Mauigoa from Miami (Fla.) and Spencer Fano of Utah. Solak says Mauigoa might be a better guard in the NFL and that Fano, 6-foot-6, 308 pounds, is “far too skinny” to succeed at tackle. When Berry traded the second pick in the 2025 draft to the Jaguars for a haul that included Jacksonville’s first pick in 2026 (pick 24, it turned out), he thought he was setting the Browns up to draft their quarterback of the future. In reality, Fernando Mendoza from Indiana seems to be the only top quarterback prospect in this draft, and he is a lock to go to the Raiders with the first pick. And let’s not forget wide receiver — another wide hole in the Browns offense. Carnell Tate of Ohio State and Jordyn Tyson of Arizona State are the top two receivers in the 2026 draft, but Solak ranks both a notch below any wide receiver drafted in 2024 or 2025. Solak deduced this is a good draft for “bodies in the bullpen,’ but not a good one for “the next elite guy.” Related Articles Todd Monken officially names three coordinators to coaching staff Browns safety Ronnie Hickman out of hospital after New York mugging Browns defensive coordinator hire Mike Rutenberg has no link to Jim Schwartz Todd Monken close to finalizing Browns coaching staff Browns ask Texans’ permission to interview Cory Undlin for defensive coordinator opening ...read more read less
