Lake Metroparks Farmpark will be hosting Maple Sugaring Weekends Feb. 28 to March 1 and March 7 to 8 to provide an opportunity to discover the history and science behind the production of pure maple syrup while witnessing each step in the process firsthand. Attendees can take a wagon ride to the Woo dland Center to see how sap is collected, boiled and processed using both traditional and modern methods, according to a news release. People also can venture out to the woods to explore the sugarbush, where they can collect sap from maple trees and pour it into a horse-drawn sled. Attendees also can discover how to make maple syrup at home and see the fascinating process of collecting sap through a vacuum tubing system. “It takes around 40 gallons of sap to produce just 1 gallon of syrup,” Farmpark Event Manager Andy McGovern explained in the release. “Sap is obtained in a very brief window between winter and spring. It runs out of maple trees when the temperature is around 40 degrees following a night when the temperature drops below freezing.” People will be able to go from tap to table by sampling freshly-produced maple syrup, candy and maple stirs and enjoying a pancake breakfast in the cafe for an additional fee. Farmpark’s own pure maple syrup and maple candy will be available for sale. There will also be opportunities to meet farm animals, make a mukuk (bark) bucket, and enjoy the large indoor playground in the Exhibit Hall which will also be available.
