Small business fair welcomes entrepreneurs, artists to MLK Jr. library branch
Feb 20, 2026
A mother and daughter are turning family adventures into a growing series of children’s books and games designed to introduce kids to new places, cultures and historical figures.
Shambrekiá Wise and her daughter, Sandiya Badmus, will be among the entrepreneurs featured Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026,
at the South Dallas Business Fair in Dallas. The event is hosted at the Martin Luther King Jr. Branch Library as part of Black History Month.
The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library, 2922 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., and is open to the public. Organizers say it will highlight local small businesses, artists and vendors while offering entrepreneurs an opportunity to network and learn from other business owners.
Wise and Badmus are the co-creators of “Sightseeing with Sandy,” a series that blends storytelling with education and encourages children to explore the world, even if they cannot travel.
“Little kids are coming up, and they’re like, ‘Oh, this is Sandy, and that’s Sandy,’” Badmus said, describing the reaction she and her mother often get when meeting young readers.
Wise said the in-person moments are part of what keeps them motivated.
“I love the experience and the opportunity that I have right now to literally shake the hands of the kids that are enjoying our stories,” she said.
The creators say the idea grew out of their real-life travels and a desire to give children more windows into the world, including Black history and broader cultural stories that can be missed in traditional lesson plans.
They describe their books and games as “a telescope to the world,” designed to expose kids to unique destinations and people who shaped communities and history. The stories and illustrations follow Sandy and her favorite stuffed cheetah, Zooma, as they travel by land, sky and ocean while encountering lessons tied to geography, history and food.
The South Dallas Business Fair is free and open to the public.
