2-20-26-Micah Johnson INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 20-foot sculpture of the character Aku is being permanently installed at Hobbs Station on Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, in Plainfield. The installation, created by internationally recognized artist and author Micah Johnson, will serve as the centerpiec e for an upcoming community celebration. The public art project is a collaboration between the Town of Plainfield, New City Development and Hobbs Station. Aku, a character created by Johnson, tells the story of a young boy who dreams of becoming an astronaut and represents limitless possibility. The official community celebration and unveiling are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at Swarn Park. The event will highlight the installation of the centerpiece sculpture while introducing the character of Aku to the local community. Officials said the project is intended to transform the park into a destination for storytelling and creativity. In addition to the 20-foot sculpture at Hobbs Station, Swarn Park will feature three additional Aku statues ranging from six to nine feet tall. The statues will be placed throughout the park to create what organizers describe as an immersive public art experience for residents and visitors. Johnson is tailoring the main structure specifically for Plainfield by incorporating elements that reflect the spirit and identity of the community. The project launch also aligns with the debut of Johnson’s latest book, “Aku: Journey to Ibra”, scheduled for release on March 3. The publication is part of a tour culminating in the March 7 community celebration in Plainfield. Johnson’s work highlights the transformative power of imagination and the importance of believing in one’s dreams. The March 7 celebration at Swarn Park will begin at 2 p.m., where Johnson will be on hand to share insights about Aku and the wider impact of the public art initiative. ...read more read less
