Greg Rakestraw previews high school hoops INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It is a big weekend for high school boys basketball with a conference championship showdown between Lawrence North and Pike starting things off Friday evening on WISH-TV’s sister station, MyINDY-TV 23. ISC Sports Network’s Greg Rakestraw stopped by Daybreak on Thursday to preview the game, which tips off at 7:30 p.m. “Both these teams are undefeated in play so far, with this being LN’s final game at 4-0. Pike is 3-0. Pike just played on Tuesday night. We had that game over on MyINDY-TV 23 with Pike with a 30-point victory against Lawrence Central. The game was a little closer than it sounds, I should say. They kind of pulled away in quarter number 4, but these are two of the top 10 teams in the state, and so you will see significant Division I talent on the floor for both of these two teams.” Rake’s take on Lawrence North: “They’ve got Brennan Miller and Cameron Webster, and Brennan’s going to play at SIU Edwardsville. He’s going to be an Indiana All-Star. Cameron has had a tremendous senior year. He’s been a key contributor. He has really kind of steered the ship for this basketball team, and that is after they lost their starting point guard from last year and an all-time leading scorer in Xavier Robinson, who is now a freshman at Butler University. So — LN is not as deep (as Pike). They’re not short, but they’re not as tall as, say, Pike is. But LN gets the advantage of being on home court. These two teams played each other in the Marion County Championship back on Jan. 17, and LN won that game in overtime, so it could be a motivating factor in both directions tomorrow night.” Rake’s take on Pike: Pike needs to show up against Lawrence North because they are “so talented,” Rake says. “To put it in perspective, a friend of mine on the Notre Dame men’s basketball coaching staff was at the game on Tuesday night. I said, ‘Who are you here to watch?’ And he goes, ‘Multiple players.’ They have three likely Division I talents. That’s Isaiah Hill, who’s just a shade under 7 feet tall…Jahari Miller, a junior, and the leading scorer with about 15-16 points per game. Then you’ve got the Lampley brothers, Kenneth and Landon. Kenneth is a junior, Landon is a sophomore. Landon is probably — maybe the higher end recruit, but again on this team that really could go 9, 10, 11 deep — I think there are 3 major college basketball players.” Pike is flush with young talent, which makes this group different from other teams in the area, according to Rake. “They’ve got a couple of senior guards, but most of this Pike team are sophomores and juniors, and they’ll be back next year. You know they’re ranked 3rd or 4th, depending on what poll you’re looking at. I think they’re simply one of the top two teams to say. I think they, and Fishers are a little bit separate, not unbeatable, but separated from, the rest of the pack — in a very good foray this year.” ...read more read less
