Walnut Creek deli with 100year history closes: ‘Every great thing comes to an end’
Feb 18, 2026
(KRON) -- Genova Delicatessen, one of the oldest delis in the East Bay, held its last day on Wednesday. The deli, located on California Boulevard, has shut down after 58 years.
Genova Delicatessen's current owner John DeVincenzi cited the sandwich shop's lease as a reason for the closure but did no
t get into detail.
"Every great thing comes to an end," DeVincenzi told KRON4 inside the shop on Wednesday afternoon. "It's just the way it happens with all our leases and everything going on in Walnut Creek. (The city) has been very good to us."
Former Genova Delicatessen employee Inga Adami expressed her sadness of the closure.
"I feel like it's just sad because all the big restaurants are taking over now," said Adami, who worked at the deli for more than 30 years. "That's not right. But it's hard to make it because Walnut Creek, the whole Bay Area, the rent is way too high for businesses."

For decades, the family-run business was known for its Italian sandwiches and fresh meats. Genova's roots date back to 1926, according to DeVincenzi.
One hundred years ago, Genova's original location in Oakland debuted, and it closed in 2016, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The beloved establishment's final day drew in a large crowd, including Walnut Creek resident Brian Dulac, who been coming to the Genova for about 20 years.
"Just the authenticity of it, and it's just pretty special," he said. "You don't see that as much nowadays. It's sad to see businesses leaving when cost gets too high, so it's a sad day."
Genova Delicatessen also operates a "Ravioli Factory" at 2734 Camino Diablo. KRON4 has confirmed that Genova's manufacturing plant will remain open despite the deli's closure.
"I wish everybody, all my customers, thank you so very much," DeVincenzi said.
