How often do tornadoes happen in February in central Indiana? INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The peak months for tornadoes in Indiana are April to June. However, tornadoes can happen at any time of year, including February. Tornado data has been kept since 1950. It should be pointed out that with improvements in phone, video and radar technology, weaker tornadoes have been easier to confirm since the 1990s. From 1950 to 2023, Indiana had 38 tornadoes in February. During winter months, Indiana can still get severe weather events that produce tornadoes. In the National Weather Service at Indianapolis coverage zone, 24 tornadoes have happened in February since 1950. Hancock County recorded the most recent tornadoes during this month in 2023. Two weak tornadoes rated EF-1 happened on Feb. 27, 2023. Almost all of these February tornadoes received strong EF-2 ratings or weaker.
