Orange Vista’s Zahra Stewart joined a select group when she claimed the fourth CIF Southern Section individual championship of her illustrious wrestling career. The first Southern Section individual championships for girls wrestling was held in 2013. Only a handful of girls wrestlers have won four Southern Section titles, and Stewart is the first from the Inland Empire to pull off the feat. Stewart won the 125-pound state championship last season, but she has been wrestling at 135 pounds for much of the season. The fourth title was the most difficult, as Stewart trailed Marina’s Rianna Bernal 6-1 after the first period of the title bout. Stewart bounced back with takedowns in the second and third periods and held on for an 8-7 decision. Orange Vista finished third in the standings (199.5 points), but the Coyotes had five individual champions. Gia Coons won her second section title and first since transferring from Citrus Valley. Coons pinned all four of her opponents, including top-seeded Ashley Wafer of Lakewood in the title bout, to claim the 235-pound title. Audriana Rodriguez won the 105-pound title with a 9-7 decision over top-seeded Mackenzie Matthews of Los Osos. Sophia Galindez claimed the 145-pound championship with an 11-3 major decision over top-seeded Lillian Benoe of Fountain Valley. Tiffany Bell pulled out a 6-3 overtime win over Upland’s Sophia Lopez to capture the 170-pound championship. Chino’s Natalie Blanco is the state’s defending champion at 155 pounds. She brought home her first section title Saturday with a 13-0 major decision over Marina’s Eva Garcia in the 155-pound title bout. Hillcrest finished second in the race for the team title with 216.5 points, just six points behind Marina. Leading the Trojans was Savina La Grass, who won the 130-pound championship with a 5-1 decision over Paloma Valley’s Bryleigh Delis. Etiwanda’s Sussette Bell pinned Santa Fe’s Kailynn Santa Maria in the second period to win the 130-pound championship. Paloma Valley’s Reynalyn Geronimo won the 100-pound championship with a 3-0 decision over Lancaster’s Alyaah Bravo.
