Rain closes Happy Hollow Park and Zoo in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) -- The South Bay is experiencing a large amount of rain Monday and the rest of this week.
The rain may have caused a headache for you, but some animals at the Happy Hollow Park and Zoo in San Jose were loving it.
The public wasn’t able to see the animals though. Zoo Curat
or Shawna Protze explained how the wet weather kept the front gates closed Monday.
“We don’t have a lot of inside spaces for guests, but also all of our rides. We wouldn’t be able to function with any of our rides, so it’s just easier to be closed for today,” said Protze.

Happy Hollow’s main entrance is on Story Road, where rain made driving difficult for drivers.
The zoo also sits next to Coyote Creek, which flooded in 2017. Water levels rose into neighborhoods and the zoo had to relocate animals to higher ground.
“We monitor the creek height all the time and make sure, especially when we see weather like this,” said Protze. “We have our contacts that we can look and make sure we don’t have to do another evacuation because those aren’t fun.”

Protze doesn’t expect the creek to flood this week when the zoo will be operating on winter hours. Normally open Wednesday through Sunday, the zoo will have to play it day by day depending on the weather. The zoo is normally open during holidays, including Presidents' Day, to give kids and families something to do when school is out.
Although the gates stayed closed Monday, Protze says more than 2,000 people came to the Zoo on Sunday.
