Take a trip back in time to 1891
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site is hosting a special peek into life in the 1890s for Presidents Day on Monday.
During its “Live! Presidents Day” event, the museum is offering tours of the site with reenactors playing Preside
nt Harrison, First Lady Caroline Harrison, and members of their household staff.
The tour will take visitors to 1891, while President Harrison and his family are making a quick visit to Indianapolis from Washington, D.C. Guests will go through the president’s library, the dining room, parlor, and kitchen.
Charlie Hyde, the president and CEO of the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, says people on the tour will get a chance to talk to the reenactors and get a look into the Harrisons’ minds.
“[He was] a big proponent for conservation, called for and signed the Forest Reserve Act,” Hyde said. “He was seeking to grow the U.S. Navy…he was thinking about civil rights. There’s just a lot of conversations that are very pertinent to these conversations we’re having today.”
Museum staff also encourage guests to check out the presidential site’s newest exhibit, “There at the Founding,” which looks at the role of the president as the country celebrates its 250th anniversary this July.
“Delve into our collection and look at some of the amazing artifacts that we have here,” Hyde said. “You’re also able to sign what we call an ‘infinite scroll Declaration of Independence.’ You can add your name along with those famous signers to that document.”
“There at the Founding” will be in the museum’s special exhibit space in the welcome center until November. It’s free to visit, along with the gift shop.
The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site offers daily tours. Tickets can be purchased in person at the welcome center or on the museum website.
